A water feature is one of the few elements in a finished landscape that can fail after handover — water that clouds or turns green instead of staying clear, a level that’s a few millimetres out, a pump sized for the wrong head height or flow rate. Getting it right means treating water as its own discipline: form, movement, materials, structure, lighting, and the plant room and servicing behind it, resolved together — rather than improvised during the snagging list.

AK Water Features provides specialist design input from early concept through to technical development and delivery for bespoke water features — including rills, reflecting water features, courtyard features, water walls and rooftop water features — either as a direct consultant or as part of a wider design team.

CONCEPT DESIGN

Establishing the role, character, and spatial presence of the feature within the wider landscape. This can include early design studies, initial pipework & plant room space layouts, visual direction, and initial feasibility advice.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Refining the proposal into something coherent, buildable, and well resolved. This may include materials, edge details, water levels, any special effects, lighting integration, and coordination with the surrounding materials and landscape.

TECHNICAL DESIGN

Producing the information needed to take the feature forward into fabrication and construction. Depending on the project, this may include technical drawings, pipework layouts, setting out information, bespoke fabrication details, and coordination with specialist suppliers.

PLANT ROOM & SERVICING DESIGN

Resolving the infrastructure behind the feature, including filtration strategy, circulation requirements, access for maintenance, and practical coordination with the wider build.

INSTALLATION

AK Water Features offers installation of bespoke water features, helping with project delivery from developed design through to completion.

MAINTENANCE & AFTERCARE

Every water feature is designed to be maintained, not just built. Every project includes an O&M manual from handover, with ongoing servicing, water treatment monitoring and seasonal commissioning available as a standing arrangement — so the feature performs the way it was designed to for years, not just the first twelve months.

A NOTE FOR ARCHITECTS

This process sits comfortably alongside a RIBA-stage programme — concept and feasibility broadly aligning with Stages 1–2, design development with Stage 3, and technical design with Stage 4 — so the water feature can be coordinated with the rest of the building and landscape design from the outset, rather than resolved late and in isolation.

ON WATER, RESPONSIBLY
